A Real Life Confession From A Professional Organizer – Take 1


I have a confession to make. Can you believe that it took me over 2 years to complete my first e-book "An Organized World?

Why do I share this with you?  Does the sense of overwhelm, fear or  procrastination stand in your way between you and creating the organized and clutter-free home you've always dreamed of? I am here to say that I can completely relate to and  understand what you are going through.

It's important to me to share a synopsis of my journey during the creation of An Organized World as a way to inspire and influence you, to believe in yourself and make your dreams of transforming your home and life come true.

I know what you are thinking.  What does creating an e-book and going through the process of decluttering and organizing a home have in common?  The answer is plenty!!

As my book came near to completion, I had an “Aha!” moment and realized that there are many similarities between completing this project and the steps one must go through to declutter and organize their home.

So while the truth may hurt, I believe it's time to rip off my band-aid and expose the painful truth in my 3- part series where I will take you behind the scenes in creating An Organized World.

As a professional organizer, for years I thought it would be fun to reach out and gain knowledge from other organizational professionals from around the globe. I was curious to know what the similarities and differences are in these countries.  Do they organize their client’s homes the same way as we do in the States? Are they faced with the same clutter issues that seem prevalent in the United States?

Everyone I mentioned my idea to thought it was an interesting concept and that I should pursue it.

Just as one can dream for years of creating the clutter-free lifestyle of their dreams, without taking any first steps forward, that vision will never turn into reality.

While the original idea of An Organized World came to me a few years earlier, I used a variety of excuses to never pursue it.

  • I want to create a book, but, I don't know where to begin.
  • I am overwhelmed at the steps needed to complete this task.
  • Am I capable of learning new technology?
  • Is this something I can afford to do?

and the biggest excuse of all?

  •  How and where can I find time to complete such a huge undertaking?

Do any of these excuses resonate with you?

  • I want to organize my home, but, I am overwhelmed and don't where to begin.
  • I don't have the skills needed to organize my home.
  • It will cost too much to hire a Professional Organizer to help me.
  • I don't have the time to organize my home.

A few years back, my daughter and I were enjoying a nice dinner and I once again brought up the topic of creating this book.  By this point, my family was growing a bit tired of hearing me talk so much about it that she said, “Stop talking about it and just do it!”

I thought, what's the worst that could happen if I did? Well that thought was short lived.  In the second part of this three part blog series,  I will expose what continued to keep me from moving forward, which is probably the biggest dream stealer of all.  Can you guess what it is?

So what's stopping you in your quest of obtaining the organized and clutter-free home of your dreams.  Is it overwhelm, time, money or fear?

    Funny that I happened upon your post today. I have been wanting to greatly simplify my life/home for approximately three years. I would do a little bit here and there but the progress is extremely slow as there never seems to be time. Approximately 1.5 weeks ago, I decided to have a Power Hour each day to work on it. I still have a long way to go but I am finally make progress towards that goal.

    I am surprised myself :) But as I began to write the forward I really began to reflect on the comparisons. I also realize that it's just not related to my book....I feel many of the same excuses and fears can hold us back on any dreams or goals we wish to accomplish...only if we want them to :)
